2nd Week of Advent!!

This is such a busy time of year, with so many distractions!! Yes, Christmas time!! A time where children are thinking of the gifts they want!  In the classroom my concentration is on the gifts WE can give to Jesus!  I'm sure you've heard of our classroom visitors?? The kindness buddies have partnered with the Christmas Angel to encourage a spirit of giving rather than receiving!  Talk to your child about some of the exciting things they have been doing as kindness gifts for Jesus :).  Each day they have been leaving them a kindness note, giving them a kind deed to do for others.  Some deeds will be things for them to do at home :) please give them the opportunity to help out :) This has had a very positive impact on their overall behavior- it is FANTASTIC!!! I'm so proud of their willingness and excitement to do for others!!!

This week I will start giving sentence dictation as part of the spelling test.  Instead of giving challenge words, I will be giving them two sentences.  The sentences will be given with words they have had or, words they should know. Also, in order to get the sentence correct, they will need to write a proper sentence with a capital letter in the beginning and the correct punctuation at the end.  We have been doing lots of writing practice, and they know how to write a sentence.  We will practice this before the test, but you will need to do this at home too :)

Their reader will go home twice during the next two weeks for practice.  The stories are getting a little more difficult, and they need to practice!! Starting in January, they will have a reader or book go home each night, along with any other homework that is assigned. This begins the transition to 2nd grade!!

YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE READING EACH NIGHT, AND DOING MATH FACTS PRACTICE EACH DAY ALREADY :) !!

Our December birthday party will be next Thursday, December 18th at 1:30. I will post a note for parents to sign up to bring in goodies etc for that day :). If your child's birthday is this month , please sign up!! The children feel so special when they get to provide something for their class. If you'd like to help that afternoon, it's always appreciated too :)

This Thursday December 11 at 8 am , the first graders will be doing their advent presentation for morning prayer:) come join us !

ADVENT BEGINS!!! Are you ready for Jesus's birthday ??? December 2014

Advent is a wonderful and busy time :). We will be very busy, but we will work hard to prepare for the birth of our Savior!!

We will work on little acts of kindness as gifts we can give Jesus for his birthday. Ask your child about the kindness buddies who have visited our classroom. We have two helpers who love to give the students wonderful ideas for small acts of kindness :) they LOVE these buddies!! They come in each day to see where they have moved to in the classroom, and what kindness note they have left for them!!! It has been such a positive tool in the encouragement of a positive kindness attitude :).

Also Santa has sent one of his special Christmas angels to watch over us. She loves to see the kindness that my students share with others :).I wonder where she will be on Monday!  She is helping us prepare the manger for Jesus :). Each little act of kindness my students do they will add a piece of straw to his bed. The more we do, the more comfortable Jesus will sleep :). Let's go First Graders !!!!

I have many projects planned....... But I need parents to help prep for them. One project I need for the beginning of this week!! If you would like to earn your hours , please let me know!!!! Give me a call 209-658-3753. I can even get the materials to you before school begins on Monday if you you have any spare time!! :) What spare time?? I know, but projects don't stop! Ever :)

We will have centers this Wednesday :). Please let me know who will be able to make it. Thanks a bunch!

This Friday 12/5 @ 8:15 is an all school mass, and 12:30 dismissal. Please make sure your child is in a clean uniform :) thank you.

Saturday 12/6 is the annual Merced Christmas Parade. Please join the crowd downtown to watch our student council members on the best float in the parade!

AS always please make sure to read your child's planner EVERY NIGHT!  There is homework EVERY night. Some parents are signing but are not reading and making sure their child does the homework. We need to work together to build organization and responsibility skills!! These are skills essential in life...... Let's build the strong foundation for a lifetime :).

Also, please practice addition facts each day!! I can tell that some are not doing this :(. When each child becomes a master at addition we can have a ice cream sundae party!!!! Let's go first graders!!!!

Short week!! 11-12 to 11-14

Hope everyone has enjoyed the long weekend- THANK YOU , VETERANS!!

Reminder: canned food is due THIS WEEK, Also, the shoebox items are due by the 17th of this month. These are just of the little ways we can "do for others"!!!!!!

We have a short but busy week.  We will not have a new vocabulary list, but we will still have spelling.  Here is the list:

cloth
frogs

The vowel sounds, blends, digraphs, and contractions have beened covered over the last few weeks. Please start studying today :)

I am in need of help putting thanksgiving table decorations together. First grade is responsible for OLMs annual dinner decorations.  If you can show up about 9, that would be great. It shouldn't take longer than 1 hour. Thank you so much in advance!

We will have a whole school dress rehearsal on Thursday, November 13th at 8:30 in the auditorium. I could use help that morning as well, to get the students into their costumes :). If you can , just stay when you drop off your child that morning, and we can get them into their Indian shirts ( those are at school ).  I'd appreciate any help :) thanks again for the support :)

The Thanksgiving program is that night.  The program begins at 6:30, but please drop your child off at 6:15 in our classroom rm 3. Have them dressed in jeans, leggings , or a skirt. Have them in a plain shirt; they will put their Indian shirt over their other shirt. They may wear any shoes. The program will be 45 min to an hour. The students will not be allowed to leave UNTIL the program is over. We hate to have people getting up and leaving when their child's class is done. Please stay and enjoy the entire program :) then pick up your child after it's over, we thank you for your support in this matter!

I'd like to congratulate our first ADDITION MATH MASTERS!!! Go: Connor Schuesler and Mikayla Santiago!!! They have mastered all the levels in addition!! Many other students are catching up!!! Please continue to practice each day, the kids are so modivated and all want to get the title of ADDITION MATH MASTER :)

First week of November 2014

So sorry this is late, there is so much to go over :)

Urgent!!!!!!

This week we are making our Indian shirts for the Thanksgiving Program next week!
I know this is last minute, but I need for each child to bring in 1 large, plain , white t-shirt by Wednesday. We will be making our costumes on Wednesday morning.  If you would like to come in to help, please be there about 8:30 AM. Please let me know if you can't send in a shirt, I will make sure your child has one.  Maybe daddy has a clean undershirt....??? You can send that in if you'd like!  We are also making the Thanksgiving Dinner table decorations that morning too. We could use parent help with that as well.  Please let me know if you'd be able to help- email as soon as you can , so I know how many helpers I'll have that day, thanks!  lynnee@sbcglobal.net
If you are able to help, bring in good scissors for cutting fringe on the shirts. If you have more than one pair, that would be VERY HELPFUL!! AGAIN I THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP :)

October 20th- Conference week & Book Fair!

Happy Sunday!!!

Upcoming events to look forward to :)

- We are performing in the Annual Thanksgiving Program on Thursday, November 13, 2014 @ 6:30 PM.  We will be performing the all too famous "Spoons"( a Mrs. Mill's favorite :)) and a Native American rhythm dance. We will be making shirts for the Indian Dance. I'll be asking you to send the shirt in soon. I will need parent helpers on the day we do this activity ( making the shirts) at school. I'll post the date and time on my blog :). I'll ask Janie to post it on the class Facebook page as well--- it's a fun way to earn hours!!!

- At the end of this month- Wednesday, October, 29 @ 1:30 we will be celebrating our September and October birthdays!  If your child had a birthday during this time, please sign up to bring something. Remember you don't have to just bring in food items. You may bring in a pencil, eraser, bubbles etc.  please don't feel obligated to bring something expensive or an entire goodie bag. It's just so your child may hand out something to their classmates at their birthday party. :). Our last celebration was a blast- we had treats and played games at the end of the day- like a real birthday party :). They loved it !  It made our birthday students feel so special :). I will post a sign up sheet this week!

Because this week is conference week, we will be having 12:30 dismissal all week. Please make sure you know your time so that you'll be here. Our conferences are only 15 min. So you'll want to have your full 15 min.  If you're the first conference, we start at 1:15 PM. I can't wait to see each of you!!!
Packets weren't sent home last week, because that will give us an example of your child's daily work.

********PLEASE, it is very important that you return your child's signed report card with your child MONDAY AM. This is an important part for your conference, thank you for supporting this request:)

We have just begun to discuss Native Americans in Social Studies.  If you have items, resources, or are a Native American, please let me know. It's wonderful when parents can come in to speak to the class.
If you would like to come in to share or have resources that you can discuss with the class, please come in--- this is another great way to earn hours !!!!  Thanks :)

******Just as a resource, here are a few ways you can work with your child at home:

Read to your child-- ask them questions about the story
Contraction words
Compound words
Short vowels words
Rhyming words
Practice handwriting
Basic Math facts/ addition

Using the internet:

Talk to them about various saints you might know
Native Americans - plains Indians

Like I've said on many occasions, we are partners in the education of your child.  I appreciate the fact that many of you have come to talk to me.  I have loved all the positive feedback that I've received.  I also appreciate when parents have come to me when there are questions or concerns, instead of other parents first.  When parents don't come in to see me, but discuss the situation with others, it's very counter productive. So remember,  my door is always open :). We're in this together!

******* Morning drop off. Please do not come to the classroom with your child if the bell hasn't rung, even if the bell is about to ring.  You must go to the auditorium with your child.  We have had an increasing amount of children wandering around before school instead of going to the auditorium where they will be safely supervised. This rule is about safety. The office staff has asked teachers to remind parents of this rule.  Thank you for your support in this matter!

Remember they must be signed and returned the following Monday, October 20th.  If it isn't signed and /or returned on that day, your child will have to sit out 5 min- with an additional 5 for each day after that.  We need these report cards for that week of conferences. Thank you fir your understanding and support in this matter :)

** A permission slip will go home this Tuesday for our exciting field trip to Hunter Farms Pumpkin Patch next Wednesday, October 15th.  Please mark your calendars. If you can drive( have fingerprints, safe environment training completed, and this year's car registration/ insurance info turned into Carnation ) please let me know!! We will be leaving OLM by 8:30 and will be returning by lunch that day. ***** remember no siblings are allowed to attend the trip with us. It is an insurance liability.

Is your child a MATH MASTER??? We are up to our 4th level of addition tests!! Some students are math masters in all 3 levels so far........ I can tell most have been working on the facts at home.  Remember we are working on memorizing the facts, so that students aren't relying on manipulatives ( fingers , beads etc)....... This is a school-wide goal!! However,  I still have a couple who haven't passed the first test :(. I have a chart in the classroom, please come to see how well your child is doing..... I want for every one of my students to be masters!!! This will take practice at home :). Please, help your child be successful :) I want all my students to master the addition facts by December!  I will plan a special treat along with scheduling a "Fun Friday" for the same afternoon :).  LET' GO FIRST GRADERS---- YOU CAN DO THIS :)!!!!!!!
ARE YOU A FIRST GRADE MATH MASTER ???????

I am trying something new to help students to control their talking/ no talking in the classroom. Please ask them after school about their "Quiet Buddy". Their reward for keeping their quiet buddy 4 out if the 5 days in a week- will allow a sock monkey to go home in Fridays :).

I apologize for the mix up with the spelling words last week :/. I was out sick and my substitute (mrs. costa- also my mom) collected the list after the activity they did with list.  I was SO impressed how connected the parents are that they got the words and got them sent out to almost everyone - I love that there's a Facebook page that got them listed for parents!! AWESOME JOB PARENTS!!!!

Vocabulary words this week:

*** I will begin vocabulary assessments. This assessment will include the first 6 weeks of vocabulary. As I suggested, if you kept reviewing all words along with the new ones each week- your child will do well.  If you haven't please review them.  If it looks like your child will need more review, I will write a note in their planner.  Thank you.

MATH MASTERS!!!!

I'm sure your child has mentioned that we are doing a math facts challenge in the classroom.  I have a chart, and when they pass each of the different levels of addition tests, they get a sticker on the chart. In order to move on, they must pass each level.  When we get through with the addition levels, and your child has passed each level, they will get a treat to be announced at a later date.  If your child is struggling, please work with them at home :). Flash cards are the best way to learn the facts. I really want each child to pass the challenge!  It may take extra work from you at home to help them learn them!! Remember we want your child to learn/ memorize the facts. With practice, this is possible.  You can have them start with the 1's then move to the 2's and so on.  Have them write the facts out 1+1=2 and so on.  All these strategies are very helpful in teaching them "how"to memorize- a skill they will need in subsequent grades to study for tests.  It's never too early to start learning this skill.  So far most of my students are doing very well!!!! Go first graders!!!!!

Here is a revised list for centers:
1st and 3rd Wednesdays:

Tina Roberts
Lori Gallo
Melissa Pareira
Mrs. Weber- Emma's grandma
Mrs. Buendia

2nd and 4th Wednesdays:

Lori Gallo
Tina Roberts
Janie Schuesler
Mrs. Buendia

****** I am in need of another volunteer for the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays.  If you would like to volunteer in the classroom and earn hours, please, please let me know :). If you can't do both, and would like one of the days, please let me know!! Thank you so much !! Your support is always appreciated!! ******

A word about illnesses ....... Please, if you know your child is sick( coughing
a lot, fever , etc) please keep them home. Children this age catch EVERYTHING, so if you can, please keep them home.  When you send them, and tell them " if you don't feel well, have the school call home" , it is all they think about.  They are very distracted and don't get their work done.  It's a lose/ lose situation.  We all need to be responsible in keeping all students well.  Thank you for being supportive.

I was so proud to see so many of my students at 9:00 Mass on Sunday!! Go Lancers :)

Don't forget, this Friday is the BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS Mass.  Mass begins at 11:00 on the front lawn in front of preschool. If you are bringing a pet, you will keep the pet with you during the mass.  Your child will go to you after the mass, for the blessing.  Please remember to walk your child back TO THE CLASSROOM after the mass.  I will have already taken the rest of the class back.  We will need to account for everyone before I can dismiss the class.  Also, it is a 12:30 dismissal day.  Please be there at that time to pick up your child.  Thank you :). If you can, please let me know before Friday,  if you will be bringing your pet.  This helps with organizing them after mass. It's good to know who will be staying with a parent for the blessing, and who will be walking back with me.  Thank you again.

September 22-September 26

Upcoming dates to remember:

This Friday 9-26 is spirit free dress- students need to be in navy blue and white- or OLM t-shirt that can be purchased in the office.

Sunday, September 28 at 9 am- OLM School Mass at St. Patrick's Church.  Please join us for mass as a school family, students should wear their OLM School uniform- Let's show our parish that we are proud of our school :)!!!

October 3rd-  is our Blessing of the Animals Mass.  Mass begins at 11:00 AM on the lawn in front of preschool. If you bring your pet, there will be a section for parents and their pets.  Students will sit with the class, and then when it's time for the animals to get blessed, they can join you and their pet.  School will dismiss at 12:30 for minimum day.  Students must come back to the classroom after their pet is blessed to get their backpack and be dismissed for the day.  This way all students are accounted for.  It can be a little stressful because the students who don't have pets walk back to the classroom with me after mass, and your child is with you and their pet.  Please bring your child back to the classroom when you are done.  THANK YOU for your understanding in this matter!

HAPPY SEPTEMBER!!

We have a busy, full week!

We will start addition timed tests and spelling tests!  Usually the math facts timed tests are given 3 to 4 times a week at the beginning of the math period.  They are 25 problems, and I begin by giving them 5 min. to finish.  If they don't finish, it's ok....... I would rather see them complete some of the problems accurately then complete the test with many errors.  It is a work in progress, with practice at home and at school, their scores will improve.  This is a school-wide goal.  Learning these basic facts will help with their overall math success!

Spelling tests begin this week.  The words are given out on Tuesdays( but if you check the blog, you'll have the words Sunday nights :) ) Hint, Hint...... Check the Blog every week.  The list contains 8-10 words to learn.  I also give 2 challenge words on each test.  They will follow a concept that we have practiced in class.  For example, this weeks words are short vowel "a" words.  So challenge words may follow that. We have also been going over "th" and "ch" words, and they may be words with those patterns.  Just remember that practicing each night with your child is very helpful!

PARENT HELPERS NEEDED!!!!!!!!!
******Remember you must have fingerprints completed and have attended safe environment training to work with the students!!!!!

Next week I would like to start centers.  Centers with go from 8:45 to 10:00 every Wednesday.  If you can help please let me know as soon as you can, so I can set up a schedule.  If you can help every week, or only on particular dates,  let me know that too.  This way I can give everyone a chance to come in.  Remember, this is a fun way to earn those parent hours, and it is a great way to see what we are learning in first grade.  Write me a note or send me an email as soon as you can, thanks in advance, for your support :)

PROGRESS REPORTS GO HOME THIS FRIDAY!
They will go home on Friday, and MUST come back signed on the following Monday!

Just a note:
They are a PROGRESS report.  They are grades that show progress thus far.  They can be improved for the report card.  If you have questions or concerns, please come talk to me.  My students are doing well so far this year!  I am very proud of the efforts so far !! :)

Heads UP!

We will very taking a trip to the Hunter's Pumpkin patch October 15th.  If you want to help drive and chaperone- you must have fingerprints done, and have completed the safe environment training here at school in order to attend and help us with the trip.  ALSO, IN ORDER TO DRIVE, YOU MUST HAVE ALL REQUIRED INSURANCE INFORMATION TURNED INTO THE OFFICE.  Please talk to Carnation to get the paperwork you with need to fill out and what you'll need to turn in to the office.  Thanks

******Next safe environment training will be THIS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 IN THE SCHOOL AUDITORIUM AT 6:00 P.M.!!!  I'm not sure there will be another one before this trip, so if you haven't attended you need to attend !!!

This week's vocabulary: Please continue to review past words as well as the new words!

First week of September 2014

We have four new monkeys that have joined our first grade family :). I think they heard how much fun they will be able to have!! They love kids and can't wait to travel home with my students!!!!

Things to add to your calendar for the month:

If you'd like to work in the classroom or take field trips with the class, you must be fingerprinted and have attended the safe environment training. If you are new to the school, you will need to get your fingerprints done and attend the safe environment training- this training will be this Tuesday night 9-2-14, at 6 PM in the school's auditorium.  Remember you will not be able to work in the classroom or attend any trips with the class unless you complete both your fingerprints and safe environment training.  Our first trip will be to the pumpkin patch on October 15th!

ITBS TESTING will begin the week of September 15 and continue all week.  Please DO NOT schedule appts for your child unless it's during the afternoon that week.  This is one of the tools we use to identify your child's strengths and weaknesses. I find these scores helpful in planning curriculum in my classroom. I thank you for your support :). I encourage you to make sure your child gets plenty of rest and has a good breakfast each morning. I plan, with my room parents , to provide my students with a healthy snack each day of testing, as well as a treat for the end of the week!! Please talk to your child about doing the best job they can on these tests. Thanks again !

This week I will begin giving timed math tests. I will begin with the basic addition facts up to the sum of 10. The tests are 25 problems, and they will be given 5 minutes. They are not used for a grade. But to provide them practice to learn these basic facts quickly and accurately. This is essential in building a strong foundation in mathematics. All concepts are built on the foundation of the basic facts.
Please continue to practice these basic facts. We will move to sums of 18, then move on to subtraction facts.

Vocabulary this week:

I want to thank the parents who provided for our first birthday celebration for summer birthdays!  My students loved all the treats and goodie bags. Your sincere generosity was so appreciated ! :). Each of the birthday students felt special! Our September birthday celebration will be Friday, September 26, 2014.

Just a note-
Each week a packet of graded work goes home.  Please go through these packets to see your child's progress on a variety of subjects. Go over the mistakes with your child to help them better understand the concepts being taught.  This is another great way to foster the importance of education. Also, please remember to come see me if you have any concerns.  I'm here to help you educate your child :). Open communication is crucial to the success of your child this year!

Love,
Mrs. M

It was so wonderful to see so many of you at Open House!! I enjoyed seeing each of you and your children. I was thrilled to see some of the sock monkeys too!! We are off to an EXCELLENT start to the year. My students are settling in to the high standards in my classroom :). They are working very hard, and have shown responsibility with doing their best in the classroom as well as completing the work that is assigned each night.  Thank you parents for doing your part as well.  It's our partnership that will help your child be a success this year!!

Week 8/18

WECOME BACK TO THE SECOND WEEK OF FIRST GRADE!!!!!!!!!!

We are off to a successful start to the school year :). Everyone seems to be settling in to the class rules and procedures. Again please make sure to remind your child to bring home his/her planner and "Home" folder EACH night. This is important because usually there will be homework and / or important info that goes home each night.  Also you must check and sign the planner EVERY night including Fridays. If the planner isn't signed or homework isn't done or returned, your child will lose some of his/her recess.  Thank you for your support in this matter.

So far most students have been following this procedure each day!! Yeah, GO FIRST GRADERS!!

7:50 am ----is when your child should be at school EACH day. This is very important because they need to get unpacked before the 8:00 bell. We also start filling out the planner in this time. This helps them get ready for the day.... Rushing to get ready creates unneeded stress on your child :). I would appreciate your help on this. Thank you.

Unpacking---- please allow your child to unpack and get ready on there own. This builds needed independance that they need in the first grade. They learn listening skills , also a must, this year.  When you allow them to be responsible for tasks like this, you will see the independance and responsibility, at home :).

Upcoming info :

Sunday, August, 24 11:00-1:00 is Open House
Please come by and visit your child's classroom and buy a delicious Tri-tip/ rigatoni lunch!! Hope to see everyone there!

Vocabulary words this week:
1 rain
2 sun
3 on
4 white
5 it
6 get
7 to
8 color
9 do
10 have

***** you should be practicing vocabulary words each night!
***** Also, please practice addition facts with your child. Math apps or flash cards are a great way to learn them. Our ultimate goal is that your child leard these basic facts without using their fingers. We will begin taking timed math facts tests in a couple of weeks. Start with the facts with sums up to ten - example 7+3=10, 6+4= 10 etc.

Please feel free to come to me, if you have concerns or questions if/when they arise. I'm always open to listen and help you.  Remember we are a TEAM :)

God Bless!

Welcome to First Grade 2014-2015

Welcome students and parents to Mrs M's first grade class !!!

If you're reading this today, you read my parent letter and came to "Meet the Teacher" night last Tuesday! Please remember to read my blog on Sunday evenings each week.  Here is where I will post important info about the week coming up :)

This will be a busy week for my students.  I will be reviewing concepts, and going over rules and procedures all week.  Please have your child at school on time.  Our day begins at 7:50.  Right away we get unpacked and start writing in our planners.  Typically we do this before we go to prayer each morning.  I like the kids to be unpacked, organized, and at least starting to fill in there planner before prayer.  When we get back from prayer, I will take roll, and take lunch & milk count.  Please make sure to let your child know whether he/she will have a hot lunch and/or milk, or if they will eat a cold lunch.  This helps Tremendously!  This way we can get started with our academic time.

On the first day many forms, letters permissions slips, and medical forms go home. Please sure to sign and return these forms ASAP.  The office needs all updated info each year!! That is "Your Homework"!

******Please bring in ALL supplies LABELED.  Put only a few pencils, a pink eraser, glue stick, scissors, and 1 box/ 8-pack "true colors" crayons in your child's box.  The rest of the labeled supplies should come in a LARGE, LABELED ZIPLOC BAG. Thank you .  This REALLY helps with organization in the classroom!  When your child runs out of something, I will have it at school and will hand out what they need.

When dropping off your child, please do not come in and unpack their things.  I will help them. This will teach them responsibility. ALSO this helps with some off them that have separation struggles.  TRUST me they will be fine, they will grow to become an independent student and child- that's a BIG goal for first grade.  When a parent lingers or stays in the classroom, the child will be more concerned about his/her parent, and won't follow morning procedures.  DO NOT unpack for them, get planners out , or get them their chair.  They can do/ should do these things on their own. This is all part of encouraging independence :). They can do it!! Thanks for your support on this matter :)

Remember both Monday and Friday are Mass days this week.  Boys and girls should be dressed in full uniform.  Girls in their jumpers, and boys in their pants. On other days until October girls and boys may wear uniform navy shorts . Please refer to the parent handbook for uniform policy.  Make sure to follow ALL uniform rules- shoes, laces, and hair and hair accessories have strict guidelines. Thank you !

HOMEWORK:  we will start having homework this week. Your child will have homework each night- no more than 10-15 min. Please let me know if it is taking your child is struggling with it.  I'm here to help :) Please encourage them to bring you the planner to sign each day- including Fridays.  Please check their homework as well. If you get them in a regular routine, your child should remember to bring you their planner and homework on their own.  Putting this responsibility on them, help build responsibility and independence!!

Again, please know that I am very open and willing to help with any and all issues that may arise.  We are partners in your child's education!! My position is much more than a job, it's my ministry :).

SEE YOU AND YOUR CHILD TOMORROW MORNING!!!

1.  There will be no hot lunch this last week of school. PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD A COLD LUNCH ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. On Thursday, BBQ lunch of a hot dog or hamburger will be provided. Each class is responsible for bringing paper products, sides, drinks, and a treat. A list has been hung in front if the class for a week now, and I believe all products have been chosen.
2.  HELP WANTED!!  We will need help for cleaning day on Wednesday .  Some of the things that need to be done are:
*Wash desks inside and out, tape remnants need to be scrubbed off ( I have goo gone for that). Chairs will also need to be washed.
** books need to be recovered using brown paper bags.  Two entire sets of books need that badly!! THESE CAN BE TAKEN HOME TOO- great way to get those volunteer hours :)
*** We need help on Thursday running games, as well as supervision of the children. We want each child to have a great time, but safety is always our main priority.
****Also, helping with lunch itself is needed, along with clean up is a must :)
************ I really appreciate any and all support you can give!!! THANKS VERY MUCH :)**********

THURSDAY IS APPROPRIATE FREE DRESS- REMEMBER NO OPEN TOE SHOES OR TANK TOP SHIRTS OR DRESSES ARE ALLOWED.  LAST WEEK THERE WERE SEVERAL GIRLS who were in tanks.  This time they will have to call home to get other clothes.  Thank you for following uniform policy written the handbook.

Countdown to summer begins!!!

This Friday is the 8th grade carnival. Students will need to buy tickets for the games AND food.  They usually come around to the classrooms early on Friday. $10 is the max they should need to buy.  If they run out and need more tickets, there will be some for sale at the the carnival.

There will be regular spelling this week that goes home on Tuesday, with practice test Thursday, and final test on Friday.

There will be no other homework :)

Remember when your child is absent, they miss the work that is done that day.  Because we are so close to the end of the year, it will be difficult to make their work up( because of the time constraints).
We will be working up to the last minute, it's not summer yet :). Work that isn't done, will be given zeros.  It's so important that your child be in school everyday.  Thank you.

I'd like to also put together summer work packets. Paper will need to be sorted, compiled and stapled.  If you still need hours, let me know :)

Thursday 5/29 is field day!! Mrs. McParland has been planning some games, and will be contacting parents to bring in snacks and sides for lunch because our main dish - hamburgers or hotdogs- will be provided by Mrs. Brockman and friends. They have been so kind and generous to do this for us for the last several years!!! We love them :). We will need help running games, providing supervision etc. please contact Mrs. McParland or I if you would be so kind to help with any of this :). I really want this to be a fun day, the kids so deserve this for all their hard work this year!!!!!
She will have a sign up sheet to take volunteers!!

As you know we have the 100 club.  The students who get 100% of their vocabulary correct will become members of the club ( don't worry I will make sure EVERY child will make the club). We will have a "Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae" That afternoon as their reward!! We will need help and items for this event. Please contact  McParland or I if you'd like to help !! Thanks to all who continue to support and help us build these positive experiences and memories for our children :)

Friday 5/30 is our last day together :(. This is only a 2 hour day starting with Mass as a school family, and then dismissal is at 10:00. Students must be picked up at this time because there is no after school care.

I have truly loved being your child's teacher this year!! They will forever have a place in my heart!!!

First week of MAY 2014 !

Thank you to the parents who provided cookies and/or soda for the second grade reception after their First Communion on Saturday !! I really appreciated those who helped set up, serve, and clean up. It really made my life easier that's for sure! I can't thank you enough for your continuous support !!!

I wanted to also thank my students!!! They really were so well- behaved and reverent during our May Crowning prayer service. The readers were fantastic, too!!! Go first grade!!!!!!!

Now on to a normal week!! There will not be any new vocabulary this week. Yeah!!! We still have lots to do, and much to learn. They will not have much homework, except reading. So........... Here's to an easy week!!!

If you have signed up for the summer enrichment program, please note that I'd like to move the due date for the final payment to no later than the last week of school, to follow what the other summer enrichment teachers are doing.  So anytime before then is fine. If this will be a hardship because you weren't counting on paying until the beginning of next month instead of the end of this month that's ok, just let me know :). We can work that out!!! I am so looking forward to working with your child this summer :).

April 28- May 2

Welcome back to a full week :). Hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing time with their families. It was well deserved. My students have really been working hard.  We have several weeks of school and there is still so much to learn. So here we go!!!

We will be practicing for the May Crowning Prayer Service.  It will be on Friday, May 2 which is also Grandparent's Day. Some of the students have taken readings to practice. Please make sure they practice all week at home, and we will practice at school.  Thank you. Each child will be participating in the crowning event . They will each present a rose to the Blessed Mother during the service.  They also will be singing and doing sign language to a beautiful song for the service.  You will definitely want to attend this service because it is truly moving and special.  Please be sure that your child is in their best uniform that is clean.

A note will be going home about the first grade responsibilities for providing the reception for the second graders after their First Communion Mass.  We will provide the cookies, drinks, and the help for this event .  It's a really special event for our second graders, their families, and our school.  Be sure to check your child's planner on Monday. It will be stapled in their planner!  I appreciate any help you can provide before, during, and after the reception. Thank you !

Holy Week April 14 - April 17

What a busy but special week !!! I am so very proud of my first graders :). They worked so hard, without complaining too! I am truly blessed to have such wonderful and supportive parents.  You worked so hard driving my students from place to place. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks so much :). No we will be working on the next special events- May crowning!! We will be working on a very special prayer service for the Blessed Mother on May 2nd.  This is also Grandparents day. Some students will be reading, singing, and all will be processing up with roses for Mary.  This is one of most beautiful services!!

Before this we have another event that the first graders are in charge of- the First Communion reception after their First Communion Mass. Each student will be bringing either a 2 liter bottle of sprite or 7up or 1 dozen cookies.  I will need volunteers to come and collect the items from school on Friday, May 2nd and go to St. Patrick's church and set up the cookies and drinks table in the foyer of the church.  If you will be able to help out, let me know.  We will also need helpers for the morning of the First Communion to serve the children and their families.  A note will be going home this week about this event.  Thank you in advance for your help.

This is a short week, I will be sending home vocabulary and spelling on Monday.  Please begin review/ studying them right away.  I have noticed that some of the students aren't studying their vocabulary and spelling.  Many actually have told me that they didn't study.  This is evident also in their assessments.  Please help your child with this. It really helps them in their daily spelling and reading success!!

It's a busy week, one that should have a meaningful effect on each of the students.

As you know I've been doing several incentive strategies to encourage positive behavior inside and outside of the classroom.  What a difference it has made!!!  We have been doing FUN Fridays for the last two weeks.  They love this.  In order for your child to be able to participate in this event, your child cannot sit out more than two times in a week.  This allows them room for mistakes. It's a form of a 3 strikes your out strategy.  So far it has really been a positive!!! Go first graders!!!!!

The other strategy is the sticker chart. When they fill up the entire sticker chart(25 stickers) they get to pick a prize from the prize box!! What child doesn't want a prize, right?? They may earn a sticker for a variety of reasons:  following rules, being kind, completing work on time etc.  My students are really working hard to earn those stickers!! GO 1ST GRADERS !!!!!!

Donations needed:

Paper towels
Clorox wipes

For Fun Fridays:
Play-dough, and play dough cutters, molds etc.
100 piece puzzles
Craft supplies
Other fun ideas or games are always welcome:)
&
Prizes for the prize box are always welcome :)

I appreciate all your support !!!!!!!

Spring Conference Week 3/24to 3/28

This is the beginning of the 4th quarter....... I can't even believe it!!! As a note I am transitioning from dependent to a more independent style.  Students are now being asked to read directions ( some) on their own and complete the assignment independently.  A few will struggling due to the fact that they are not strong on their reading or vocabulary foundation. Please practice vocabulary and reading each night or every other night to strengthen this foundation.  Also I have begun to move a little faster. Many students are doing well because they are listening to the teacher.  When a child needs to be redirected often, the rest if the class has to wait.  To truly be ready for 2nd grade they will need to be able to keep up and pay attention. To practice this skill at home, give your child multi-step directions to complete tasks.  With practice this will help them to listen completely to what is being said.

Also it has come to my attention that parents clean out their child's backpacks and take out planners to sign them when the child is already in bed.  This will not help to build responsibility.  Please have your child bring you the planner to be signed.  Also you should really go through backpacks together.  Some items have gotten lost because" mom cleaned out my backpack".  Your child knows what they need to save to bring back to school.  This reinforces open communication with your child about what they are doing in school .  This is a very valuable time where your child can learn to be responsible for their learning.  Yes, this too takes time, but it is so worth it!! This helps to give them a sense that they are in charge of something.  This also builds confidence in being a successful learner !!  That us our ultimate goal , right ??? :)

This is spring conference week as well as the spring book fair. We have 12:30 dismissal all week.  As we begin the fourth quarter, I have seen so much growth. I look forward to seeing you at your child's conference.  This is a really exciting time of year because the students have come so far academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually!! Please be on time for your conference so we can spend the full time- 15 minutes.  Thank you.

This Tuesday and next Tuesday the first grade is in charge of leading the morning Lenten reflection.

Coming up the first graders will be joining the 8th graders for a Stations of the Cross presentation.  Not only will we be presenting the live version of the Stations of the Cross, we will presenting them for several retirement homes.  This will take drivers :). The dates are April 9th and the 11th. Times aren't.  set yet, but I'm putting it out there for parents to plan to drive. A permission will be going out this week.  Please let me know if you will be able to drive as soon as you can!! Thanks :)

I have noticed that some students are struggling with reading vocabulary. Please be going over new and past vocabulary consistently. Much of what they do now in the 4th quarter they will read on their own. This will really be a challenge if they are not practicing the vocabulary.  This is in addition to nightly homework.  Yes , this takes more time out of your day, but isn't your child's academic success important??? Just a thought :)

In math we have begun clocks/ time. In first we work on the hour and half hour. Some students are struggling with the half hour.  A few are struggling on which hand is minute or hour. Please practice this at home .

March 10 to March 12- Short Week!!!

Some of you are very good about checking the blog each week.  The blog is very important because that is where I list upcoming dates/events that you need to be aware of.  I also use the blog to give information about what we are studying in class and suggestions about what to work on with your child. So as an experiment to see who is checking the blog, bring in an apple to give to me.  This will let me know who is indeed checking the blog.   Thank you for your help :)

We will be having a test in math.  The test is on counting coins.  We have been going over this every day for a while.  Your child should not only be able to identify each coin as well as the value of the coins. We are working on pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters only.  They must be able to count on according to the value of each coin.  For example:

Q+Q+D+N+N+P+P=
25, 50,60,65,70,71,72= 72 cents

We will begin telling time next week hour and half hour, on a regular clock.   I highly suggest you review this each day as well because telling time can be a difficult concept for first graders. Thank you for your support :).

We are in the season of Lent in the church and have begun discussing the Stations of the Cross.

Reading at home should be a regular activity whether I send home a reader or not.  Students know the vocabulary , but need lots of work in fluency.  Reading and then rereading a story again helps to build good reading fluency.  Practice, Practice, Practice makes perfect!! :)

I am working on encouraging good behavior in the classroom .  Students know the regular routine and the classroom rules.  I should not have to continue to remind them of such things.  I will begin Fun Frudays where students who do what they are suppose to do and follow rules in and outside the classroom will be able to participate in fun Friday.  Each child has a sticker reward chart on their desk where there will earn stickers for doing the things they need to do without constant reminding.  If your child has to be reminded too often( where they don't earn stickers) or has to sit out more than twice in a week, they will not be able to participate in the fun Friday activity.  I will start the chart this week.  Because it's a short week, we will go until next Friday for our fun Friday activity.  Please encourage your child to work on following routine and following the rules.  Thanks for the support!

There will not be any new vocabulary words this week.  There will spelling words given out on Monday with the final test on Wednesday.  Please start studying Monday night for the test on Wednesday. Here are the words:

see
feet
steep
keep
green
bees
sleep
sheep
speed
meet

First week of March 2014!!!!! Thank God for the RAIN!!!!!!!

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and the first grade is responsible for planning the Mass. We have been learning about the parts of the mass.  We have been making a mass book.  Go over it with your child.  I have assigned some students to read and bring up the gifts during the offertory procession. Our biggest job is to sing with the choir.  We will sing various songs during the mass. Mrs. Poole has been working with my students so that they know the responses as well as the songs.  If your child has received a reading part, they will need practice, practice, practice!!!  If they're practicing at school and at home- they will read with beautiful fluency =) Thank you for
your support.  The mass begins at 8:15 AM, in the auditorium. Hope to see you there!!!

Friday 3/14:

Stations of the Cross@ 8:15 AM- please join us for this important day in the church!

Friday is a 12:30 dismissal. All students must be picked  up at that time or they will go to extended care.
